Paper Trading Experience with tradeMONSTER Online Brokerage (Review)

Recently, I tried the free online paper trading platform from tradeMonster. Just want to share my experiences with the readers here.

What I like about the trading platform:
* Very easy customization of interface, really user-friendly.
If we want to customize / change the layout of the screen, it can be done just by one click.
This easy customization is offered in each screen.
For example:
In the Option Chain screen, with just one click, we can expand/collapse the Calls/Puts sides of the Option Chain.
When we expand the Calls side (and collapse the Puts side), for instance, we can see all information about Bid/Ask Price, Volume, Open Interest, Implied Volatility (IV), etc. for various strike prices, all can be viewed in one page. We can even choose to view all those info for different expiration months.
In addition, in case we want to customize (add/remove) the column/s (e.g. add High and Low Price, Greeks info, such as Delta, Gamma, Vega, Theta, Rho), we can simply check or uncheck boxes provided. Marvelous!

* Real-time, streaming data throughout the trading platform, such as Quotes, Charts, Option Chains, Time & Sales, etc.
It allows quick monitoring of the fast changing market and also helps to make trading a lot more convenient, e.g. for setting the limit price.

* Browser-based trading platform.
We dont need to download any software to start the application and, therefore, can trade from anywhere. I like this, because it is particularly convenient when we need to work on a few different computers (e.g. office and home computers), or when we want to change from old to new computer. We dont need to reset our preferred interface settings all over again when we need to use another computer.

* Easy click trading.
Whenever we want to trade, we can simply click on the symbol (whether stock or option), and then a new window will pop up to allow for a quick trade. We can do this at any page/window were in, such as Watch List, Option Chain, Market View, Quotes.
With this quick trade window, we dont need to type in the symbol when we want to trade, so its much easier and faster, especially for trading options (e.g. spreads, strangle, straddle, condor, butterfly, etc.)
I believe that option traders who like to trade more complicated strategies as mentioned above would love this!

* There are brief descriptions/explanations about the technical indicators just below it.
It helps to give some ideas (e.g. what it is for, how it is derived) before applying the study to complement chart analysis.

* Provide comprehensive research and fundamental analysis about a company.

* Provide comprehensive & clear Help menu.
It even has pretty cool introduction videos that show all the capabilities of the interface.
So, its very easy to learn and familiarize ourselves with how to do certain things using this interface.

* Provide free Investor Education, including live webinars, articles, and interactive courses.

Areas of Improvement:
* The Technical Analysis studies for chart analysis are currently still rather limited.
For example, there is no Fibonacci tool for chart analysis. Of course, this limitation may be subjective. This may not matter to other people, because they might not need to use this analysis tool as I normally do.

* The use of chart is not as convenient as the other interfaces.
For example, when Im interested to analyze the particular area of the chart, I cannot zoom in to that particular area to by simply dragging the cursor. Also, I cannot show and monitor several charts for different symbols simultaneously in one screen. However, these can easily be done using Prophets JavaChart.

* While there is an advantage of being a browser-based trading platform, there is also disadvantage.
When clicking some tabs / buttons, it takes some time (a few seconds) to load the application. The loading speed will depend on our internet connection. The faster the internet connection is, the faster the loading speed will be. However, once the application is already uploaded, we need not go through the loading process again, as the interface is already cached.

Wish Lists:
If I could wish, it would be even much better if the trading platform provide the following:
* Screener for Stock and Chart Patterns
* Options Calculator / Pricer

This is particularly useful for those who like to use technical analysis to help their trading and option traders. As if most their needs can be fulfilled in one integrated application.
Though they are not available yet now, I heard that many improvements for trade analysis tools are under development.

PRICING:
The commission charges for Options are $0.50 per contract, with a minimum commission of $12.50 for single leg orders, and $7.50 per leg for multi-leg orders.
For Stocks, the commission charge is $7.50 per trade (regardless how many shares bought), unless trading in after-hours where there is a 1.5 cent per share added charge.
Here are the tables for some comparison:

For Options Single Leg Order:

For Options 2-Leg Option Spread:

For Stocks:

As comparison, for options trades, my broker (Interactive Broker) charges commission $0.70 / contract, with minimum per order is $1.00.
So, for those who usually trade 18 contracts or more per trade, TradeMonster will be cheaper.
For those who trade less than 18 contracts per trade, Interactive Broker would be cheaper.

However, the good thing about TradeMonster is that there is no minimum monthly fee. Hence, in case youre on holiday and do not trade at all or do not actively trade for that month, you dont need to pay any fee. Whereas for Interactive Broker, there is a minimum monthly fee of $10, even if you dont trade at all for the month.

In addition, for Interactive Broker, if you make any cancelation or modification to the order (that has not been executed yet), it will charge you some fees as well. However, no such fees will be charged by TradeMonster.

Closing Note:
Actually, its rather difficult to describe how easy and simple the customization of interface is. Like when I was trying to explain about how easy and simple to customize Option Chain, actually words are still not good enough to describe. Of course, itll be much better if one can experience it himself. Hence, if youre interested, you may want to try the free paper trading provided from this broker. One good thing about its paper trading platform is that it allows you to execute trade during non-trading hours. So, you can try it anytime, during the weekend or your own free time.

Opening a paper trading account is very easy. You dont need to open the real account or fund the account first. You just simply apply by filling up some particulars, then the free paper trading account will be open instantly, no need to wait for approval process, etc.
Happy trying! =)

Getting Started Trading

How To Apply Stock Chart Indicators In OptionsXpress

Stock charts without any indicators / studies will look naked. Indicators / studies chart (e.g. Moving Average, MACD, Stochastic, RSI, etc.) help tremendously in our chart analysis.

The following is the steps to apply indicators / studies in the stock charts in OptionsXpress:

1. Click the Tools button on top of the chart >> Studies >> Apply Studies.

2. A window will pop up. You can choose any studies under Select Studies list. There are many indicators / studies available there. After you select, then click Add.

3. After you are done selecting the studies, you can save them for future use.

If you have more that one saved studies, you can manage them from My Studies at the right side. Click the plus sign to list down all the studies, then double-click the study you want to apply in the chart.

How To Detach & Clone Charts in OptionsXpress

In the previous post, I showed the step-by-step guide to start real-time streaming chart in OptionsXpress (OX).
After starting the chart, you can also detach the chart and make it as a new window, and clone it so that you can monitor more than one stock chart at the same time.

There are 2 ways to detach the chart:

Option 1:
Click the Detach button in the Options box at the bottom left corner. (See picture below)

Option 2:
Click the Detach button at the top right corner. (See picture below)

There is a difference when using Option 1 & 2:

Using Option 1, the detached chart actually does not stand by itself, although its become a separate window. So, when you go to the main page and would like to use other tools (for instance, you want to check out the Option Chain by clicking Chain option under the Quotes tab), the chart window will disappear.

Using Option 2, the detached chart would stand by itself. Hence, when you want to use the other tools in the main page, the chart window will not disappear.
So, after clicking Detach button at the top right corner, the chart will be separated in the new window. Then click the Detach button in the Options box at the bottom left corner in the new window. Another window will pop up again.

If you need to monitor more than one stock chart at the same time, you can clone the chart by clicking the Clone button, just next to the Detach button in the Options box. You can then arrange the charts (say, 4 charts) in such a way that they all can be shown in one screen.

How To Start A Real-time Streaming Chart in OptionsXpress

In the earlier post, I mentioned that if you open an account with OptionsXpress (OX), you can use their real-time streaming chart for free. Since Im familiar with OX charts, for the benefit of the beginners or those who have just opened an account with OX and still not familiar with it, Id like to share here the steps to start live streaming chart in OX, so that you can save some exploring time. Hope it can be useful. :)

Note:
You need to ensure that youve install (latest) Java software so that the streaming charts will work.

STEPS TO START THE JAVA STREAMING CHART IN OPTIONSXPRESS (OX):

1. Click: Quotes >> Chart >> Java Charts.
2. Wait for a while. Take some times for loading the chart.

3. After the chart is loaded, you can then select your chart setting:
a) Chart type: Candle, Bar, Line, etc.
b) Chart Window (Period of the chart): 1 day, 2 days, 1 mth, 3 mth, 6 mth, 1 year, etc.
c) Time frame: D (Daily), W (Weekly), M (Monthly), Q (Quarterly), Y (Yearly).

4. You can also set your chart options and select respectively in the Options box at the bottom left corner if you want: Log scale or normal scale, color the chart or just black & white, to hide / unhide studies or drawn item or volume.

5. To activate the real-time streamline chart, you need to tick the Streaming Chart in the Options box. Once its ticked, a new box appears in the top left corner below the stock ticker (Symbol), showing Last, Bid, Ask, Volume, etc. You will notice that these quotes and the price highlighted in black (at the left side) are moving during trading hours.

6. However, the candle (if you choose candle as your chart type) may not be adjusting the price movement as fast. You can refresh it by clicking Go near the box where you type the stock ticker (top left corner).

Update:
If you want the chart to stand by itself as a separate window, you can detach the chart.
You can also clone the charts, so that you can monitor a few stock charts simultaneously.
Read this post on how to detact & clone charts in OptionsXpress.

My Online Stock Option Brokers (Part 2)

Go to Part 1.

Interactive Brokers (IB):

  • Fewer steps for placing a trading order, and hence its faster in order placement procedure. Very good for those who are already familiar with trading order placement.

  • Fee and Charges for Options Transaction: USD 0.75 / contract.
Minimum commission charges per order is USD 1.
Hence, when you buy only 1 contract, they will charge you USD 1. And when you sell to close your position, they will charge you another USD 1.
For more details, you can check out here.

  • Minimum initial deposit to open an account: USD 5,000.

  • For IB, after you apply for account opening, you need to get their approval first before you can open an account with them. After your application is approved, you can then proceed to fund the account. Please note that for IB, your account will get activated only after you fund the account.

  • Getting market data (real-time streaming quotes) is not automatic after your account is activated. To get real-time market data, you need to subscribe market data. The monthly subscription fee is USD 10, but it will be waived if your monthly commission is more than USD 30.

  • To do virtual trading in IB, you need to apply for it too. They will then open a virtual trading account with a different User ID and password, separated from your real trading account.

  • IB charges minimum monthly fee of USD 10. So, after your account is activated, although you have not subscribed for market data, they will still charge you USD 10. But when you subscribe for market data and suppose you dont have any trades at all (so commission charges = 0), they will charge you only USD 10 too, which is for the market data subscription (not USD 20 which is for minimum monthly fee plus market data subscription.
Therefore, I think, if you choose to use IB, you should open an account with them only after you are ready to start real trading.

  • When you make modification / cancellation for your order, they will charge you too. The charges will vary depending on exchanges. You can check here for more details.

Note:
I have no commercial affiliation with OptionsXpress (OX) or Interactive Brokers (IB). Nor am I recommending or promoting these brokers. Here, Im only sharing with you my experience and what I know about the brokers I use. So, this is for informational purpose only. You should do your own research and comparison with the other brokers. Here is the list of some online stock options brokers.

My Online Stock Option Brokers (Part 1)

In the previous post, I pointed out some factors you should consider when youre choosing online broker for you.
To help you find some more info for consideration, Ill share with you here what I know about my own brokers. I personally use OptionsXpress (OX) and Interactive Brokers (IB). Hope the following info can be quite helpful.

OptionsXpress (OX):

  • Good for beginners. The system guides you step-by-step what you need to do when youre placing a trade.

  • Nice charts. They provide real-time streaming chart (powered by Prophet.Net) and real-time streaming quotes & option chain for free. I like their charts. Its clean and easy to use (e.g. apply indicators / studies). You can use the charts once you apply to open an account with them.

  • They have a lot of great tools like Options Pricer, Historic vs. Implied Volatility Charts, Strategy Scan, Trade Calculator, Screener, and many others. I personally like to use their Options Pricer and Historic vs Implied Volatility Charts.

  • OX also allows you to do virtual trading (paper trading) even before you fund the account yet. So, you can fund the account when you are ready for real trading.

  • Minimum initial deposit to open an account: No minimum deposit is required to open an account, but the account must have enough buying power to pay for a trade before it is placed. And for margin account, a USD 2,000 minimum is required to maintain a margin account. (Check out here).

  • Fee and Charges for Option Transaction: USD 1.50 / contract.
Minimum commission charges per order is USD 14.95.
Hence, even though you only buy 1 contract, they will charge you USD 14.95. And when you sell to close your position, they will charge you another USD 14.95.
But if youre an active option trader, they can charge you less, i.e. USD 1.25 / contract with minimum commission charges per trade of USD 12.95.
For more details, you can check out here.

  • OX does not charge any monthly subscription fee or minimum charges. There are no charges when you make any modification / cancellation for your order as well. The only charges you have to pay is the commission charges when your order is filled.

Continue to "Part 2".

How To Choose An Online Stock Option Brokers

To start trading options, you will need to find an online brokers with option trading facility and open an account with them. Online brokers usually offer relatively lower commission charges, so its good for keeping the trading cost low. High commission charges can slowly eat up your capital without you realizing it.

There are many online option trading brokers out there. Finding the right online broker to meet your needs or requirements could be a quite difficult and daunting task.
Basically, there are some factors you will need to consider:

  • Commission / other charges.

  • Minimum initial deposit to open an account.

  • Website performance (e.g. websites loading speed especially during peak hours, whether the order placement procedure is easy and not complicated or confusing so that you wont be prone to making mistakes, system reliability).

  • Features / tools (e.g. live streaming charts / quotes, analysis tools, etc.).

  • Ability to get National Best Bid and Offer (NBBO): The broker is able to get the best available ask price when a customer buys a security and the best available bid price when a customer sells a security. That means the customer order has to be exposed to the 6 options exchanges to get the best available price at that moment.

  • Customer service: Whether there is customer service which you can contact immediately for assistance in case you encounter problems with your website during trading hours (e.g. via chatting room with the customer service).

  • Contact Alternative: Whether you reach them by other means than internet, such as phone or fax, in case of emergency.
